Merry Christmas

Well, Christmas time is here! Sitting here just doing nothing, sipping on a wonderful 21 year old Scotch, wearing the very appropriate Santa Stampede shirt. Watched it snow on and off all day. Drove around last night and looked at lights until the roads started to get a little too slick.

A friends recent Facebook post made me think back on a question. The post I saw says:

Just a reminder-- life is way too short not to tell the people you love that you love them. You never know when tomorrow won't come.

The question that was posed to me a while ago, was why I decided to go with the name "Running Like There's No Tomorrow". Why would I want to run if there is no tomorrow, what's the point? Well, it's simple. You just don't know when that next tomorrow won't come. And I'm not talking about life or death, although that does hold true. You just never know what is next that could stop and prevent you from doing what it is you love. I could step and slip on ice tomorrow and so severely hurt something that I may never run again.

A lot of things have been put into perspective and I've learned so much over this last year. In the scheme of things, we are very small, and the time that we're here isn't that long. But we can accomplish amazing things in that time, both for ourselves, and for our friends, family, and fellow human beings. Take in every minute and make it your best. Tell those around you how much you appreciate and love them. And remember, that in what ever you do, you're never doing it alone. Even if that person is not there physically with you, you never, NEVER, are fighting alone.

Looking forward to 2014

Well, 2013 is almost over. I've come along way. Five races between September and December, with the final one in Colorado. Wow! I never thought I'd accomplish anything like that. I loved every minute, even the ones with frustrating registration and courses. I can only see things getting better in 2014.

So far, I have registered for the 2014 Crazylegs Classic in Madison at the end of April. Beyond that I've still got my eye on BolderBoulder a month later on Memorial Day. I think there are at least three races that I did this past year that I will run again. So, if you're considering making a donation to an organization this next year, you'll have plenty of opertunities.

First, I have my StandUp2Cancer team, with a goal of $1000 by May 26, the date of BolderBoulder. I really like this one as all the money goes to research. You can made just a general donation, or you can make it in memory or honor of someone you know who has been affected by cancer. Definatly worth checking out.

I do plan on running two other charity races. I plan on running in Carbones Race for Research, which benefits the University of Wisconins's Carbone Cancer Center. This was the first race I ran, and I think will always hold that special place. Hopefully this next year they'll get the distance right. I also plan on running in the Make A Wish run that I did spur of the moment this last year. That one was just so rewarding seeing the Wish kids along the course and hearing some of their stories, or the stories of why some of the teams had formed.

I'm also open to suggestions of organizations to run for. If you have one that you like, please, let me know about it and I'll see if there is a race near by, or if I can kind of hook up with them like it did with SU2C.

Training for Colorado

So I was just asked on my Facebook how I prepared for running in Colorado with the crazy elevation change. Other than really working on getting myself physically fit, I did some quick research. A Google search lead me to an elevation training mask, www.trainingmask.com. As goofy as it looks, and maybe as scary as it looks, I'm a believer. The mask can simulate air density from 3000 feet to 18,000 feet.

With an elevation of just over 1000 feet here at home, and about 5300 feet at the race venue in Colorado, I needed something. I've been going out to Colorado for the past few years, maybe twice a year. Each trip was never involving anything really physically demanding. That was probably a good thing. Even just walks around a park were enough to get me winded. I started with it at it's lowest setting, 3000 feet. I did my normal workouts with it on. At first I could only last a few minutes. Soon I was going 30 minutes to an hour no problem. Time to turn it up! All this started about 2 months before the race. Kept working up, eventually doing my workouts at the 12000 foot setting. I ran with it a couple of times at 3000 feet. It sure felt different. But 3000 feet wasn't going to cut it. And really, that would be close to 4000 feet when you take into account the existing elevation. I was still 1000 feet short. So on a couple of my last runs before heading out west, I adjusted it to the 6000 foot setting (now simulating 7000 feet). I was now running at an simulated elevation well over what was needed.

I flew into Denver on a Wednesday morning with the intention of giving myself a good day or so to adjust and run late Thursday. I didn't wait until late. I went out Thursday morning, found a great park, and knocked out 2.5 miles no sweat. Felt great after, and for the rest of the day. Lots and lots of water. If you've never been to the Denver area, water is one of your biggest friends. You can't drink enough out there. Between the altitude and being high desert (that's right, desert), you dehydrate easily. Rested pretty much the remainder of Thursday. Went on a long walk around a museum and the zoo on Friday. No alcohol on Friday, as much as I wanted a beer with my sushi.

Up early on Saturday. Had my Shakeology breakfast, about 24 ounces of water, and then 8 ounces of water mixed with Cellucore's N0 Extreme about 30 minutes prior to race time. During the race, I had two bottles with 8oz of water mixed with Cellucore BCAA. I think I only touched my water once during the race. I really felt good. Not a lot of huffing and puffing coming out of me. There were a lot of people slowing and really working hard to breathe just after the first mile alone. I just kept going. The final sprint was up hill, and really was amazing. When I finished I really did feel like I could have done more, and it almost seemed like it was short. But between the race map being accurately measured, and my running app, it was correct, maybe even just a little longer. After I got back to my hotel, I did crash. It was mostly one of those tired from being up at 5 in the morning and the emotional drain of it all.

Rocked that race out! Looking forward to doing all again for a 10k in May!

Success in Colorado!

Colorado was awesome! Some great running out there. I flew in bright and early Wednesday morning, hit up my favourite breakfast place then off to Fort Collins for a brewery tour. Brewery tour turned into a beer or two after along with an amazing maple and bacon waffle. Then back to Denver to rest and hydrate.

Thursday brought another wonderful sunny morning. Had breakfast and then headed out for a run. There's a great park in Stapleton, on MLK boulevard. It's on the site of the old Denver airport. The tower is still there. Lots of paved trails and open spaces. That run felt really good. I only ran about 2.5 miles in 22 minutes. Fairly steady pace. It was fairly warm, great running weather. Not even 24 hours there and I was moving. Not even winded. Went back to my hotel room and got cleaned up for what ever the rest of the day had in store for me.

Stapleton, CO.

Saturday morning came. It was cold, about 20 degrees when I got to the venue. But the sun was out so that helped. Met a family also from Wisconsin who was out there on vacation and their 9 year old daughter was running in the 5k as well (it was also her first Colorado race). After the national anthem we all walked down to the starting line, formed some sort of blob and started. The course was fairly narrow, think two lane bike path. For the first mile or so it was a lot of passing off of the path. The first mile went by fast. Soon things got sorted out and I found a comfortable pace. No huffing and puffing from me, but there sure was from quite a few other people. The course followed a creek, and was quite scenic. Overall I'm very happy with how I did. Finished 197 out of 777, 14th out of 28 in my 35-39 mens group, with a time of 28:58.

Bring it on!

Well, here I am. Less than a week from heading to Colorado. I'm feeling good. Ran this morning in the cold, 13 degrees, and did it in under 26 minutes with my mask set to 6000 feet. The snow is starting to fall now. I was planning on running on Tuesday before I head out West, but that might not happen. The cold isn't really as much of an issue as how the road or trail conditions will be after the snow. So, this might have been my last run before heading out. That's ok. It'll give me time to rest, and I'll try to run on Thursday.

It really is amazing how much positive thinking can help with performance. Yes it was cold. Yes I was giving myself a "disadvantage" by wearing my elevation mask. And yes I hurt a bit. But I thought of all the positive things while out on my run. How compaired to other things in my life, or in others lives, this is nothing. It's 3 miles. I can do it! Even when I felt myself slowing, I'd dig deep and find something to help push me along. Todays run was just under 26 minutes. I'm happy with that. Very happy. Between the cold, the rutted up trail and sucking air through that mask, I killed my run. I am so ready for next Saturday. I'm sure it will still be a challenge, but I am ready. I'm ready to go there, run, finish and find my name on that results sheet. I'm ready to see all the names with Colorado cities next to them, and then find my Wisconsin city name, and show them that some guy from the lowlands can compete just as good if not better.

Bring it on Colorado! I'm coming for you.

1 down, 1 more to go

Well, it was a cold run today, but did good. First Berbee Derby is in the books. 728th out of 4025. 527th out of 1791 men. 39th out of 145 men, ages 35 to 39. 27:06. I'm happy with that. My first experience with a wave start, and my first course with hills. Nearly froze waiting for the thing to start, and as I was waiting in the corral to get started I got a cramp in my back. But, once we got going it went good. The first mile or so we had the entire road to spread out on and that was a good thing. So many people who started in my wave who were supposed to start in others. I was in the "J" wave, and there were "K" and "M" wave people in there. I guess they don't know their alphabet. Passed quite a few in the first two miles, lots slowed up on the first big hill. I just kept chugging along. But getting up so early really took alot out of me. Up at my normal time for work, then to the race location by 7:30. I'm hoping that Littleton is not this cold in a couple of weeks. I know I can handle it, but I would like a little warmer for my last race. 30 at race time would be nice!

Brrrrrrrr....

It's cold out! Went on a run yesterday morning. I think this was colder than the run I did in the Ozarks. Not to mention, there was snow and slush on the road. Still, managed 5K in about 26 minutes. Had a very steady pace for the most part. Feeling pretty good about tomorrows race, other than the fact I have to be up so early, 9am race but need to be there super early to get a parking spot. I see a power nap in the car before hand.

I think the run in the cold will be good before heading out to Colorado in a few weeks. I still have no clue what to expect out there. Their weather lately has been very unpredictable, 30's and snow one day, near 60 the next. I guess last year at race time it was around 20. I'm pretty much set for that one, still have yet to book my hotel and car (I'm lazy). And it helps that I've gotten a few messages from some family and friends in the area that they might try and make it. That would be cool if I had a few familiar faces there that day. I would never expect anyone to wait out in the cold for me. Now, when I return in May, it'll be nice and warm and there shouldn't be an excuse, other than the masses of people that will be there for that one. Hmmm, I wonder if I'll make it on TV for that one as it is televised.

Well, just sitting around waiting for breakfast to digest a bit before getting my workout in for the day. Typically I don't do anything real physical the day before a race, but I've been feeling real good lately and figure if I can get it done in the morning I've got the rest of the day to relax. So I'll get that done, wait on the furnace guy to come for the winter checkup, and then I have a massage scheduled for the afternoon. I think today is going to be pretty good to me!

Confidence booster

Well, I got a huge confidence booster today. Picked up my bag-o-schwag for Thursday's race. Hot dayum! T-shirt, gloves, discount/free coupons galore, toffee, gum. CHAA-CHING!!!  Now that's what I'm talking about. Not only that, but I got my bib and my wave assignment. Wave "J". And where you ask does that put me? That be the second wave for the 5k! SECOND WAVE!!! I had no idea until today were I'd be starting. I was thinking maybe halfway back, like in "M" or "N". Nope. That feels real good.

Not only did that make me feel good about this race, but I'm also feeling good about the one out in Colorado in 3 weeks. I went and got my eyes checked today so I could get a pair of sunglasses for running in, ordered my glasses, and picked up another set of warm bottoms. As I walked around the sporting goods store, I was trying to think if there was anything that I needed to pick up for next months race. I can't think of a single thing. Now remembering to pack it will be another story. I'm going to start making a check list so I don't forget anything. I'm really getting pumped for that race. Finally, the nervousness has started to leave. I can contend with the race day jitters all day long, but the anticipation isn't so bad anymore.

Running in the Ozarks

I couldn't just not run. Had a great early Thanksgiving with the in-laws. Found some time early Saturday morning to go and run. It was cold. Just barely 30 degrees. It was interesting. Didn't really know where I was going. Found part of my run on a hiking trail, rather than something paved or the kinds of trails that I usually run on. That added its own challenges, but was worth it. Still did my 3 miles, took 30 minutes, but with the added challenges, not too bad. Four days until the next race. Looking forward to it, then two weeks to Colorado. Really looking forward to that!!

Rocky Mountain High

Ok, well, I'm not there yet. But today's run...it's gotta be close to what it's like. Went on a 3 mile run with my elevation mask set to 3000 feet. With my geographical elevation at just over 1000 feet, it had the resistance of 4000. The first bit wasn't too bad, but once I made the turn and headed uphill, I really started to feel it. Still, completed my run in just over 27 minutes. All things considered, hills and the mask, I'd say that's pretty successful. If I can run near that next month in Colorado, I'll be more than happy. My only goal for that race is to finish in less than half an hour and cross the finish line running.

If anything the mask has really helped me to focus on my breathing. I find myself learning to take longer, slower breaths. In turn, getting more air in, and more CO2 out. My plan is to continue my workouts for the next two weeks with it set at 6000, and any runs I go on with it at 3. I've got about three weeks to finish getting ready, and I think I'll be set.

A bit behind. I blame Google.

So I'm a bit behind at writing on here, but I blame Google and the new version of Chrome. It launches right to the Google search page, not the "Apps" page where I have Blogger set. Whatever.

Anyway, I'm doing good. I'm currently in week 2 of a P90X/Les Mills Combat hybrid program. I'm using my elevation training mask along with it. That really takes things to a whole new level. Last week I did my workouts with it set at 3000 feet. This week I'm up to 6000. I did a mile run last Sunday with it set at 3000, that after a 3 mile run. Definately an experience.

Things are looking good for my run in Colorado in a few weeks. I've got my plane tickets bought, and just working out where to stay. I think I'm going to wait a bit to see if I can get any really good hotel deals. The trip has actually stressed me out a little. More so in the running aspect than anything. I've been out there a good dozen times, but this is really the first time I'm going to be doing any serious physical activity. And with as well as I've been running lately, I was fearing disappointment in not being able to do as well there. But that's nonsense. I'll do fine. Sure I might not be as fast, I might finish with the old folks, but my body (right now) is not conditioned to work at that altitude. Now that I've come to that realization, I'll be content with just finishing running. If I can do it at a good pace, and not have to resort to walking, I've done my best. I'm starting to get excited, and just seeing how well I'm kicking butt right now in Combat with the mask is very encouraging. An hour workout the other night with it, I'll be fine.

Well, really don't have much else. Remember, help me to support StandUp2Cancer.org by donating through the link that can be found at www.teammunky.com. I've got plenty of time to reach my goal, May 26th, but it's never too early to start helping. Thank you all for the support you've already shown me, it really means alot.

And it begins!

And the elevation training begins! Day 2 - P90X/Les Mills Combat Hybrid - Combat 30 - YEAH!! So I started out doing some breathing with my elevation TrainingMask set at 6000 feet. That felt good. After that moved on to the Combat workout with the mask set at 3000 feet. Holy smokes! That really was something. Felt really good. Did 15 minutes with the mask on, then finished the other half without. You forget about how important breathing is. By the time the first 15 minutes was over, it felt like I had done 30 (and it looked like it too). Finished strong.

Cool running

Went on a run this morning. New route. Went out to the UW Arboretum. I am so going back out there again, the road is good, a few uneven places, but it's not bad. Definitely one of those places that I could really stretch a run out easily and work on distance. Some nice hills as well. 3.1 miles, 25:41. I just love the feeling of getting to the top of a hill, no matter how big or small, and feeling a burst of energy as I crest the top. All that work to get up it and then I can go!

Only two more races left for the year. One on Thanksgiving Day, and then two weeks later heading to Colorado. I've entered and bought my plane tickets for Colorado race on December 14, still have yet to work out where I'm staying. But that shouldn't be too hard. Even though the Thanksgiving race is going to be the biggest one yet, I'm a bit more stressed about Colorado. The first time running out of state. The first time pushing myself in an entirely different environment. Sure there's a chance that I might see a familiar face or two at the end, but that chance is small. It's going to be a big step. But, this is something I want to do. Honestly, if I could make a living doing this, I would. I really love it. I'm not a world class athleate, and that's not my goal. I'm just some 35 year old guy, who decided to take up running and really enjoys it. Maybe someday I'll get my big break. I guess it's kind of like being a musician. You love what you do, and you don't know where it's going to take you. You might pick up some fame at some point, you may not.

Just have to take one day at a time, and soak it up.

First! Well, sort of.

Had a great run yesterday evening. There were 458 people entered into the 5K (525 if you count the people entered in the stroller derby. I'm not counting them). Out of those 458, I finished 35th. In overall men, 23rd out of 161. Then in my age group, men 35-39, there were 14 of us. I finished 1st!!! Won that by about 15 seconds. Amazing! That was one of the goals that I did have, but didn't think I'd reach that in only my third race, and a race that was a total cluster at the start. While this may have been only my third race, the start was a mess.

The 5k race was combined with the 10k. I didn't mind that as a lot of the 10k runners were quite quick and they followed the same route up until the 2 mile mark I think, so it wasn't a big deal. My issue was the people with the stollers or who were walking. There was no organization at the start. There were strollers and people who were either walking, or just very slow, towards the font. The start chute and much of the route was only about as wide as a lane of traffic. I understand, these events are open to all ability groups, and that this really is a family themed event, but come on. Yes, there were some people with strollers who finished ahead of me, but if they started up towards the front, they had almost a minute head start on my by the time I got to the start line. Several times I had to cut to the grass and sidewalk. You'd think this being the 4th year of the event they would know how to run it, but I guess when you add in the 5k races this year, that's going to create issues.

But, I was still happy with my results. it took me about half way through to separate myself from the slower groups, and get to people who were running my pace. The best part was at about the 2.5 mile mark, I found myself alone. There were people about 50 feet ahead and behind me. I had no clue how many I had passed, but no one, passed me except in the beginning when I was getting slowed up. My official time was 26:29 (I recorded 26:47, and that would make sense). My pace times were 8:16, 8:11, 8:12 and the final sprint to the finish was 7:41. I'm happy with the results. To add to the excitement, as I crossed the finish line, they called out my name. I can only assume that was for the age group category win. But that was totally cool!

If you're curious to see all the times, those can be found here.

1 of 5 bibs that had my name on it. I liked this number. I guess it was the lucky number for the day
Me and my biggest supporter. It was a cold one, had to head inside after to try and warm up.

940 of us squeezed out way through this tiny chute.

These fine men and women of the Middleton Fire Department ran the 5k in full turn out gear. Shortly after this picture they were called out.

Another day, another race

Well, here I sit. The morning of another race day. The day is starting out pretty good. While I have a bit of a cold, I don't think it's anything I can't manage and will hinder me too much. Have to make sure I keep my water intake up all day. About 3 hours now until I have to head out to the event. Starting to get myself mentally in the game.

Sometimes I wonder if I take this too seriously. I am not, at the moment, a world class athlete. I'm just a 35 year old guy who decided one day that he was going to enter a benefit run for a worthy cause because he was inspired by a friend's illness and wanted to do something to make a difference. I've since discovered this is something that I very much enjoy. While I'm not competing for some sort of award, I feel competitive while out on the courses. I want to push myself to finish better than the last time, and better than people in my age group or just those around me. I want to pass that person who just passed me.

Yes I do have fun when I'm out running. But take today's run, it's Halloween themed. And who's not wearing a costume? Me. No I'm not a party pooper. I just don't get down like that. I've got goals, and don't need the extra distraction that goes with all of that. I hope that the costume judging station doesn't slow me down or I'll be pissed. I already know this is one event that I will not be in next year, registration was atrocious. I'm a little anxious to see what check-in is going to be like. But, on the bright side, it is a great looking morning!

A beautiful morning in Wisconsin.

Keep running!

Well, it's turned a bit colder lately, but I'm still running! Times are feeling pretty solid, and things are feeling good. Had my first run in with a dog last week, that was real fun. For sure I have two races left this year, possibly three. I have one this weekend, then next month I have one on Thanksgiving day. Depending on how things work out, I may be headed to Colorado in December for a 5k. Just have to work out details, but it could happen.

Runday, sunny runday...

Went for a run this morning. 3.08 in 25:08. Not to shabby. Tried a new area today and liked it. It was interesting to see afterwards that the second half was uphill. I had no idea from the start that I was going down hill, but when I turned around at about a mile and a half, I could see it would be uphill on the way back. Almost a 100 foot difference between my start/finish spot, and the midway point. It felt good though.

It is all paying off

Had to go clothes shopping today.  2 pairs of jeans in 36x34, and a pair of khakis in 34x34. Two sizes I haven't worn in years.

Killer run today!

Had one of the most amazing runs today. Didn't get a lot of sleep last night, and had kind of a stressful day at work. Decided to go for a run when I got home, and maybe, just maybe, relax some. Oh did I relax. Got my music going and just zoned out. Tried to keep my body as loose as possible. Did amazing! 3.09 miles in 24:55, averaged 8:04! 1st mile pace 8:09, 2nd 8:15 and 3rd 7:48. Not really all that sore or tired after, almost doesn't feel like I did anything. The rest of the week I'm working from 6 am to 3pm, so I'm hoping the next run I have after work I can maybe try to go a bit further. Right now I'm battleing the fading sunlight and finishing up at sunset. But man, did that feel good!!!

It's mine for the taking!

Well, went on a run tonight. I wasn't planning on it as rain has been in the forecast all day, but I needed to. You know when you get that feeling that you have to do something? For me, that something was going out on a run. I've struggled the last two times I've gone out, but tonight, I just destroyed it! I have to say, this was probably the most difficult run that I've done to date. It was 3.13 miles, in 26:54 with an average pace of 8:36. Lots of hills. I've come to the conclusion that my regular trail route is what is hindering me, it's boring. So tonight I really changed it up.

http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/400496215

I have also decided that I AM going to win the 2014 BolderBoulder 10k. Yes, that's right. I'm taking it. It's mine! There is no reason why I can't win it. I'm learning that a lot of what hold me back is mental. If I think I'm fatigued or uncomfortable, then I will be. If I remind myself that there is no pain, that I can do it, then I will. I'm going to show those mile-high folks what this Wisconsin kid can do! Sure, it's a 10k. Yes, it's at a crazy altitude. But I've got almost 8 months to train, I've got a great support system, and I have drive. Think you can do better than me? Ok, I'll see you there. I'll be the guy waiting for your slow ass to show up after I've already done my cool down.

Speaking of BB, I also have another goal tied to it. I am hoping to raise $1000 for StandUp2Cancer by the time the race starts. It's a lofty goal, but I know it's one that can be done. I like the idea of running races where my entry fee and any donations go towards a cause, like how my first race was a benefit for the UW Carbone Cancer center. As BB is not that kind of a run, I'm making it one for me. So, if you'd like to help me out, just go to www.teammunky.com. You can donate any amount you'd like, you can even make your donation in honor of someone. As long as you donate through my team site, I'll get closer to my goal. So as the year ends down, and you're maybe looking for that donation to end the year on, or one to start next year off, please consider supporting me and this organization.

I just felt like running

So not too much new. I've been on vacation the last few days. Spent some time in Minneapolis, and let me tell you, the fitness center at the new Raddison Blu at Mall of America....amazing. Spent some time both Friday and Saturday on the treadmills there. 5k both days. Felt great! Lots of walking around the mall or downtown Minneapolis.

Went for a run today, didn't feel so great. I was really bad on my water intake today. That is so key, and I can't believe that I didn't do a good job on that. But, tomorrow is another day. Getting good and hydrated tonight, and hopefully going on a run in the morning. I got a couple of really nice running shirts for my anniversary, as well as found a great deal on a warm pullover at one of the MOA stores (have to love no sales tax on clothes). Hoping to order my altitude training mask in the next week or so.

That's about all I've got for now.

A true 5k in the books

Well, I have the first actual 5k in the books. Not shortened like the last one. Not too bad. 25th out of 71. 24:38 by their timing. Don't quite get that as I saw just over 25 minutes crossing the line, and timed 25:26 myself, but I'll take it. Either way, when you beat a guy with an IronMan tattoo, you feel pretty good.

It was a very good event. Make A Wish Foundations. Lots of Wish Kids out there, and you could just feel the excitement. I really liked this event, and will have to keep it in mind again for next year, and hopefully have time to do some fundraising for them.

Feeling good!

Feeling good today. After a slow start at work, and wanting to just sleep all day, I made time for a run after work. 3.11 miles in 26:01. Not to shabby. No stops or breaks tonight. Looking forward to Sunday's 5k for the Make A Wish Foundation.

You may have noticed a small change at the top of the page. It says "Home of Team Munky". Team Munky is the name I will use, when I can, for fundraising. My current Team Munky project, it to raise $1000 by the time of the 2014 BolderBoulder 10K on May 26, 2014. I have chosen the Stand Up 2 Cancer organization. They help fund valuable research to find an end to cancer. Please consider a donation in the name of Team Munky.

More running!

Well, I'm signed up for two more races. At lunch today I went and turned in my registration form for the Haunted Hustle 5K at the end of October. Then when I got home, registered for a 5K this weekend that is a benefit for the Make A Wish Foundation. I really like the idea of races for charitable organizations. I wish I had more time to get donations, but, it was a kind of a spur of the moment thing. It's ok though. My biggest requirement right now is to find timed races.

Ahhhh....the rumble of thunder right now. Once the storms come through tonight, tomorrow and the weekend are going to be great. Hopefully some good running tomorrow, light yard work Saturday, and a good race Sunday.

One day closer

Well, one day closer to my next race, what ever it may be. I had thought after this past Saturday's race, I wouldn't enter any more until May. Well....that's changed. I'm now looking into the possibility of entering another 5K next week while we're on vacation, and then another around Halloween. I'll just have to see how it goes, and what all comes my way. So far I'm having issues registering for the one in October as the registration web site is not secure, and the pricing info on the printable form is not correct. I've sent an e-mail to the organizer, can't wait to see what they have to say.

Anyway, went on a run today. 3.02 miles. Just around 27 minutes. A little tough getting going, but by the end felt really good. Fall is in the air, hardly 60 degrees this evening. I did slow up a few times, but that seems normal on my evening runs. I'm finding running to be very relaxing and a great way to end the day. I'd like to share something that I wrote.

I want to start by saying this is 100% NOT directed at anyone. Over the last few days, I've seen heard things, and tonight in the shower after my run I got thinking. We all need personal time. Just time by ourselves, away from the distractions of every day life. Time to just let our minds clear, even if for a little while. A time to just say "screw the rest of the world, it's all about me right now".
I've really found my personal time through my running. I'm away from people. For the most part away from technology (I still have my phone, but using it to play music and track my run). I'm not doing anything but moving my legs and breathing. I can switch off my mind for that 20 or 30 minutes and just take in nature all around me and do something for myself. I don't think we as a society do that much anymore. We work our asses off, come home, do work around the house, don't unplug from what ever it is we do, eat and sleep. Yes, I'm guilty of all of that too. I'm not perfect. I don't claim to have all the answers. I'm not saying your living life wrong. All I'm saying is that we need to make time for our own person.
We're just surrounded by so many things that cause stress and chaos. When I do my Combat routines, I can get rid of the stress, but I can't relax. Running, I can get rid of the stress and relax. We're all different and have to find that right combinations for our selves. It's taken me this long to figure it out. After a run, I feel calm, relaxed. Generally in a better mood. And it's just calming. When it comes time for bed, I'm ready. When I wake up in the morning, it's go time.
I guess what I'm getting at here, is we all need to make that time for ourselves. We all have time, and if you don't, try and make that time. It really is amazing what 20 or 30 minutes without outside distractions can do. I've seen changes in myself and other friends who have taken that time in their day, just to do something for them. Heck, even if it's not exercise, you have to do something for yourself. Go get ice cream. Go take the biggest poop ever. I don't really care. Just make it YOUR time. The key in this is "you". No one else, just you. Enjoy that time. Embrace it!

No fear

Couldn't agree with this more.  This is why I push myself every day, even on days I don't want to do anything.
